Description
Key Information
Active Ingredient: Pregabalin, an anticonvulsant and nerve pain medication.
Manufacturer: Mylan, which is now part of Viatris.
Appearance: The 300 mg capsule is a hard-shell gelatin capsule with a light peach opaque cap and a white opaque body, axially printed with “MYLAN” over “PB300” in black ink.
Usage: It is typically taken orally two or three times a day, with or without food.
Mechanism: Pregabalin works by affecting the way calcium enters nerve cells, which reduces the activity of some nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord involved in pain, seizures, and anxiety.
Medical Uses
Pregabalin is a versatile medication prescribed for several conditions:
Neuropathic Pain: Symptomatic relief of pain from damaged nerves due to conditions like diabetes (diabetic peripheral neuropathy), shingles (postherpetic neuralgia), or spinal cord injury.
Epilepsy: Used as an add-on (adjunctive) therapy with other medications for adults with partial seizures.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Treatment of long-term anxiety or nervousness.
Important Safety Information
Side Effects: Common side effects can include dizziness, sleepiness, headaches, blurred vision, weight gain, and swollen hands, arms, legs, and feet.
Serious Reactions: Rare but serious side effects can occur, including severe allergic reactions (swelling of face/throat), thoughts of self-harm, and severe respiratory depression (especially when mixed with other CNS depressants like opioids or alcohol).
Dependence and Withdrawal: Pregabalin can cause drug dependence. Do not stop taking it suddenly, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms or seizures. Any discontinuation should be done gradually under medical supervision.
Pregnancy: Use during pregnancy is generally not recommended unless the benefits outweigh the risks, as it may slightly increase the chance of birth defects. Effective contraception should be used during treatment.
Always consult with a healthcare professional or pharmacist if you have questions or concerns about this medication.
