Description
This medication is designed to be swallowed whole and should not be broken, crushed, chewed, or dissolved, as this can lead to a rapid release of the entire dose and potentially a fatal overdose. The typical dosing schedule for OxyContin is every 12 hours. For opioid-naïve patients or those with severe pain uncontrolled by weaker opioids, a starting dose of 10 mg (or sometimes 5 mg to minimize side effects) every 12 hours is usually recommended. The dosage is then carefully titrated to achieve pain relief .
Oxycodone, the active ingredient, works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, changing how the body perceives and responds to pain. It has a biphasic release, providing an initial rapid onset of analgesia followed by a controlled release for a 12-hour duration of action.
Common side effects include constipation, nausea, vomiting, headache, and dizziness. Serious side effects can include severe breathing problems, addiction, and withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly. Due to the risk of abuse and addiction, it is prescribed for the shortest possible time and at the lowest effective dose. Concomitant use with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants can increase the risk of serious side effects, including respiratory depression, coma, and death
